. . . and the day has come, and the time is now, and the fear is gone . . .

First, we have some business.

It's getting to be that time, so tell me, when do you want to have the lightning round?

We'll have it from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on one of the following days: -

-Saturday, March 17
-Monday, March 19
-Tuesday, March 20
-Thursday, March 22

If you want to vote, comment with your choice and we'll go from there.

Second, here are some random photos that I've received this week:

Lion (found in the LDS Church History Museum) texted to me by Lyn.  Nice, no?

* * *

Cupcakes made by Carol for a baby shower.  Those babies are made out of gum paste and are completely edible. If I'm being completely honest, I'll admit that I might have some qualms about eating these as they are, but I'm sure once I removed the baby (so it wasn't staring me in the face), I would have been just fine.  At any rate, it's obviously good work.

And finally, a little photo progression that I like to call,
"An Endorsement of my Grandma's Toffee Sweets"
(courtesy of Harmony)

my favorite shot.

5 points for the name of the song
2 points for the name of the musical

3 points if you have a picture on this post, but you have to comment to claim them.
other points awarded by whim

Les Mis, Red and Black?

Actually, I think the song is One Day More.

I actually think this is judy garland. Let me think about the song

I find it interesting that harmony and I both thought of the same song. I of course wasn't super confident and googled it to verify and found that once again I was WRONG! this is yet another Corry favorite that i have not seen. (I gotta remedy that) So do I get a point for remember thing that this seems to be jacob's favorite? or maybe I'm remembering past yes incorrectly...

in other NEWS, I think I'm going to log into HULU this mornign and watch last night's biggest loser episode. (A friend of mine (middle psuedo-name is Julian (or is it with an E?))taught me that hulu trick) Have to say though, this season of BL has been a Major disappointment to me. I can't stand Conda, think they are all was to DRAMA focus, and not enough weight loss focused. WAY to much whining complaining and back biting. maybe they all need to start whistling more happy tunes eh? or maybe they should just quit, go home, make up batches of Toffee Sweets, pack the weight back on and call this season a bust! (I still like Buddy and Emily, but even Emily is trying my patience with some of the things she does.)

I vote for Saturday or Monday, and I claim the Toffee Sweets photos.

I also don't think I could ever bring myself to eat one of those baby cupcakes, but they do look awesome!

And if this is Jake's favorite, then it might be Newsies. Thanks for the clue Jeri!

Harmony said...

There are lyrics in One Day More that are awfully close though.

Jake said...

If you do it on Saturday Melissa won't be participating, for good or bad.

Jake said...

Wow, Jeri, I'm pretty sure I have no idea what your favorite is, but yes this is probably tops on my list. I've actually seen very few Broadway musicals actually performed by Broadway (traveling cast of course) but I've seen this one twice.

Jake said...

I'm also excited to see it at Shakespeare this year and in Logan in a few years.

I can't award points right now, but before you all start whimming Les Mis--It's NOT les mis! Harmony is right on both counts--it's Newsies, but the lyrics are quite close to a les mis song.

deutschlehrer said...

If it is Newsies, then it is probably Christian Bale who sang the song. Harmony's favorite Christian Bale movie is Batman Begins, but my favorite Christian Bale movie is in Fact Empire of the Sun, which features neither the Germans nor the Russians, but the Chinese and the Japanese.--That isn't why it is my favorite. It is my favorite because the Christian Bale character is obsessed with airplanes--specifically the P-51 Mustang, which may be the most beautiful plane ever built. In the film he calls it the Cadillac of the skies--which may not be entirely accurate, since (and I taught this to my wife right after we were married) the P-51 has a ROLLS ROICE engine -- a 12-cylinder, water-cooled, RR Merlin Engine.

Actually, it's Doug who dances, sings, loves Newsies. The other boys are fans but Doug is ENTHUSIASTIC!!!!
I vote for Monday, I'll be tending Saturday for Jacob and Melissa and I'll be at a quilting class Tuesday to Saturday. Also I vote for whenever Spring Break is over so Jeff can go back to work.
Regarding Toffee Sweets, you do know that the only thing good for you in them are the nuts which I notice don't seem to have place on Harmony's bars either. (Nuts = protein) Cute pictures all of them.

Okay - so I was being desperate here. I was trying to be like one of the male participants here and make some sort of a link to sports. I was pretty sure that a Mustang of some sort must be in the NCAA tourney. I, of course, would have to Google that information. I decided to do the search - admit to it - and hope that I would get some points for being one of the most non-sports minded folks coming up with a sports link. Well, I got sidetracked when I looked up a bracket (yes, I do know what those are - but if you ever tell my brother we'll have to have a serious discussion) and saw that BYU won their game today. I had noticed yesterday that my Mom did not choose BYU to win - so I had to call her and mention that fact. Now, I'm out of time for making any attempt here! So, I guess I'll just vote and say that Saturday is completely out for me. Other days, I'd have to try to participate while at work. Thanks for all the fun Charlotte!

Carol said...

Comment on the cupcakes - thanks for the compliments. Most people did not eat the babies (one exception and it weirded me out to be honest). Everyone did save their little one and took her home (the shower was for a girl - so I'm saying these are girl babies). The person who ate her baby was just going to nibble on the toes - but somehow she ended eating most of it. I seriously don't know how she did it. First of all - gum paste is disgusting to me (it's just a ton of powdered sugar, Gum Tragacanth, liquid glucose (sugar), unflavored gelatin and water). Secondly, it took a while to make the babies and I was kind of attached. It felt a bit like cannibalism to me. Oh well - we all had fun any way!

Harmony--a point for being first on the board. Two points for the musical. Three points for your pictures. (You're cleaning up here!)

Total points: 6

Jeri: a point for all the biggest loser talk. I do love me some biggest loser, although I agree that this season is disappointing. There's not really a contestant left that I can get behind, although I'm not opposed to Buddy. I used to be really pro-Cassandra, but once I saw her playing the game, she was dead to me.

Jeff: The main singing on this particular song isn't done by Christian Bale, so no points for that. However, I will give you a point for naming Christian Bale as an important member of the cast. Also 2 points for Empire of the Sun, first because it's lesser known, and I'm impressed that you know it, and second, because I first saw it with Eric back when we were new-dating, and it holds a special place in my heart because of it. Also, I used to sing Suo-Gan at bedtime to Heather when she was a baby.

Total points: 3

Mom: 1 point for that discouraging information about toffee sweets.

Carol: One point for the random romp that you went on all on your own! If that's not in keeping with the spirit of this years MMM, I don't know what is! Three points for your cupcake picture, and another point because I think it's adorable that you got so attached to those babies!

Total points: 4

Nope, no nuts on our toffee sweets. If I was making them just for me and Jeff (which would be crazy fattening!), I'd put chopped pecans on them, because we both have a thing for pecans. But since it was Dallin's FHE treat and we were making them for the whole family, we eschewed the nuts. (Anyone seen the VeggieTales movie where Larry tries to eschew chocolate? He was no more successful than I would be. The VeggieTales videos, by the way, have some excellent pseudo-musicals. One of my favorites is "The Ballad of Little Joe," yet another musical western version of Joseph and the coat of many colors.)

We liked Empire of the Sun so much that we bought the soundtrack to it years ago. Charlotte, have you ever recorded Suo Gan?

Harmony said...

I meant to say "yet another musical, but western, version of..."

Nate said...

As far as Veggietales go I'm partial to "Barbara Manatee" (Note: it does NOT remind me of my favorite "Sister Bishop" I had as a child, the name is purely coincidental), and "Everybody Needs a Waterbuffalo"
I can't believe Jeff didn't make this connection Newsies. We shared a paper route when we lived in Moab. Well, shared is a relative term. I delivered the 8 papers on our street (for which he paid me a whopping $8 dollars/month) and Jeff did the rest. Which included dodging ravenous dogs in the trailer park and collecting fees from dead-beat subscribers.
The sugar babies are weird. But my Mom's favorite candies are Sugar Babies (along with Sugar Daddy's). They do remind me a bit of the mutant gingerbread men Jeff, Jon and I would create as kids. We tended to add extra arms and heads and whatnot. Mom always thought it was gross to eat those, but oddly enough she had no such qualms about the regular ones.

Mustangs were named after the herds of wild horses in the West. They are now managed by the BLM, which is who I work for. I have at times participated in the analysis of their management. And no, they do not fly in their natural state.

Lately, my favorite TV shows deal with cakes; Cake Boss, Ace of Cakes, Fabulous Cakes,Challenge over the top cakes, not so much Cupcake Wars. It is fascinating to me what they do with a slab of cake although I always think,"and people then just eat all this?!?" Those babies are just darling. I am amazed at all the detail you put into them. Even the hair. And having just held a newborn a week ago, you really captured the cuddly, soft form, newborn look.

Mom C said...

I'm concerned where this could go with Veggie Tales because I'm not up on them. I do admit to watching several with the grandkids but not for several years.

Mom C said...

Umm, Carol gets 5 points 1+3+1=5. I was just helping Spencer with his math so I'm up on counting!:)

Well newsies has already been said and some of the comments were long and I didn't take time to read them all so if this has been said I'm sorry, But the song is
The World Will Know sung by Jack Kelly aka Francis Sullivan (Played by Christian Bale aka Batman) at the start and then all of his newsie buddies join in, however his best buddy David Jacobs doesn't join in singing until the very last line.
I've been waiting for this musical. Did you know that my friends and I used to dedicate one night a week to newsies before our missions. We called it newsies night. We would go to yours and my parents house and watch newsies downstairs usually after playing ultimate frisbee on thrusday nights. They were good times. Quite possibly the best musical in the history of the world.

Doug said...

The song is directed to "The World" which was one of the nations most famous and read newspapers. It was also directed at "The Journal" another highly regarded newspaer. The head honchos of these newspapers are Joe Pulitzer (The World),for whom the Pulitzer prize is named after, and Bill Hurst (The Journal). So when the newsies sing "until we break the will of mighty Bill and Joe" that is whom they are referring to. The Bill is not to be mistaken for Bill Pullman who is also in the movie. He plays Bryan Denton a reporter for another newspaper "The Sun." Bill Pullman is also in one of your favorite movies "While you were Sleeping"
Bill Hurst is also not to be confused Bruce Hurst who was a major league baseball pitcher from St. George, UT. He pitched for the Red Sox, Padres, Rockies and Rangers. I also have his autograph!

deutschlehrer said...

Bill Hurst is part of the William Randolph Hurst empire, the most famous descendant Is of course Patty Hurst, who became famous when she was kidnapped by anarchist terrorists. Months later she was caught on video tape helping the her captors to rob a bank with automatic weapons. A victim of Stockholm syndrome, her autobiography is truly disturbing, which is probably why I read all of it--though I don't think it is as disturbing as the thought of eating one of those candy-babies.

deutschlehrer said...

I need to get as many points as I can right now (which reminds me Charlotte, Doug says it was Christian Bale who sang the song in your title) because I will get killed in the lightning round. Saturday is probably the only day I can participate, but that does not look good for the others.

Charlotte said...

Harmony: 1 point for owning Empire of the Sun. The whims aren't with you on the Veggie Tales, because we Cantwell's haven't gone down that road yet, so I don't know enough to award whims there. And no, I haven't recorded Suo Gan (yet?) Maybe someday.

Nate: 1 point for being a modern day Newsie. 1 more point for the interesting tidbit about gingerbread men. Another point for the mustang tangent, and the fact that you (tangentally?) manage the real deals.

Total points: 3

Mom: 1 point for the cake data. (I watched Cupcake wars for two episodes, but had to stop because it was making me so hungry). I'll add another point onto Carol's total. Thanks for checking my math

Total: 1 for you, 1 corrected for Carol

Doug: 5 points for the song! (I was mistaken when i said that Christian wasn't a major singer of it. I was getting the song confused with one that Bill Pullman sings. I apologize if this threw any of the rest of you off) 2 points for knowing the other two names of Christian Bale, another point for David Jacobs. One point for watching the musical weekly back in the day. I had no idea. 3 points for all that history on the newspaper stuff, and another point for tying it to my favorite "While You Were Sleeping" Movie. Another point for getting us back to sports (as usual)

total points: 14 That might be a record.

Jeff: 1 point for that interesting tale of Bruce & Patti Hurst. I'll give you a point for Christian Bale singing the song, because of my error.

Total points: 2

I'm going to add these points to the total, and then I'll come back with an update of the lighning voting.

Don't forget to attend your Republican caucus meetings Thursday night 7:00.

Well, unless you are a democrat, or not currently living in Utah.

I took the title to heart, and filed to run for State School Board. I've worried about it for months and now the day is here, the time is now and the fear is gone. Come September I'll once again start with the ads, brochures, visits. Wait... the fear is back! What was I thinking?!?
True, Charlotte, true Caucus only affects Utah Registered republicans but it affects ALL Utah registered republicans.

Melissa said I should add the next line of the song, "And we will kick their butts" or something like that.

Melissa Corry said...

And our ranks will grow, and we'll kick their rears :)

So I have been totally absent the last few days trying to get youth conference all ready to roll. I think we are just about ready :) And I agree with you on the baby thing. Does the top one in the picture have a dirty bum or is that just the lighting?? I might have an issue with eating the rear if it is poopy :)

Kaylee C said...

WELL, my DAD was in the play Newsies in Denver, and he has an awesome hat to prove it, so I think that deserves some whim points. :)

You're right Kaylee. 2 points for you, and one for Robert.
